Insuring Your Older Used Car in Albuquerque.
By: Kade Phillips, contributing writer at kanetix.com.
You may already own an old clunker, or you might be considering
buying an older vehicle in Albuquerque, New Mexico. If the question of car
insurance has not yet come up, it probably will soon.
Just about every state in the union has laws that mandate at least some
kind of auto insurance if you wish to drive a vehicle, so it’s not surprising
that drivers in Albuquerque are not exempt. This is a good thing,
as you can well imagine the chaos that could result if there were no such
thing as mandatory car insurance.
Auto insurance brings a level of predictability and safety to an otherwise
quite dangerous activity. But, there is some flexibility in the types and
in the amounts of coverage that you must have in Albuquerque.
Giving some careful thought to your own personal relationship with driving
and the automobile you use, can help to guide you to the best possible car
insurance for you and at the best possible price.
Owning or buying an older vehicle presents a different set of insurance
issues for consideration than a owning or buying a new or newer used vehicle
would. And, while a standard car insurance policy is usually a package of
different kinds of insurance, here’s a basic rundown on what you should be
considering:
Liability Insurance is mandatory. The minimum amounts may vary from
state to state, but you have no choice in the matter if you wish to continue
driving in Albuquerque. The only question to ask yourself is this: Should
I purchase more than the minimum requirement? The answer is that you probably
should if you can afford it, as this kind of coverage takes care of the
damage you cause to other people's property and injuries to the people themselves.
If unfortunately, you were involved in a serious accident with multiple
injuries, you could exhaust the limits of a minimum level of coverage, leaving
you in a financially vulnerable situation. The age of your automobile has
little or no bearing on this kind of insurance.
Medical payments coverage and uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage
are required in some states and optional in others. (Medical payments insurance
and uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage, covers medical payments to
you and specified others, in the event of an injury causing car accident.)
Albuquerque drivers and car owners with older vehicles should consider these
coverages as added protection in the event of a disaster on the road, in
which they or their passengers are injured, and the collision involves a
driver who has insufficient or no auto insurance to cover your injuries and
related expenses.
Remember that older vehicles often lack the advanced safety features of
their more modern counterparts. You’ll sleep easier knowing that medical expenses
(up to the policy limit) would be taken care of in the event of the unthinkable.
Collision and comprehensive car insurance is usually not required
by law, although when a car is used as collateral, the lender may insist
on these types of insurance. (Collision covers damage to your vehicle in
an accident, while comprehensive covers fire, theft and non-collision damage.)
But, collision and comprehensive coverage is an area where owners and drivers
of older vehicles have more flexibility and some thinking to do.
Most drivers of newer vehicles are insured for collision and theft, but
depending on the circumstances, these types of coverage may not be the best
option for an older vehicle. Obviously if the vehicle in question is a rare
classic automobile, or has particular value to its owner for whatever reason,
then it should be insured appropriately. But if the car is a beat up old clunker
which is not worth much money, then these kinds of auto coverage may be a
waste of money.
The value of the car in question is the key to determining whether
you should add these types of coverage or not. For example, if the vehicle
is worth less than a thousand dollars, and you get into an accident which
destroys the car or in which repairs would be in excess of the cars worth,
the most you’ll receive is the actual value of the car minus your deductible.
Is it worth it to be paying extra for
collision and comprehensive insurance
under such a scenario? Perhaps you would be better off putting the money
that you would have spent on collision and comprehensive aside each month
and building up a cash reserve in case the worst should happen.
It can make a lot of sense to drive an older vehicle in Albuquerque. Besides
the significantly lower cost of acquisition, you may be able to avoid the
costs of collision and comprehensive insurance coverage entirely.
