Some Myths and Facts about Auto Insurance in Indianapolis
By: Kade Phillips, contributing writer at kanetix.com.
While it’s certainly true that auto insurance is not everybody’s favorite
topic of conversation around the dinner table, it’s surprising how often
- when the subject comes up, that people in Indianapolis are misinformed
about some car insurance basics and have come to believe certain myths that
may influence their behavior when it shouldn’t.
Drivers and car owners in Indianapolis can be excused for some of their common
misconceptions about auto insurance because the topic is enormous, and can
often seem overwhelming and confusing at the best of times.
With that in mind, the following are some of the most common misconceptions
regarding auto insurance in Indianapolis, Indiana:
Myth: Your parking tickets affect your insurance rates.
Fact: Fortunately, getting parking tickets does not impact your car
insurance rates. However, not paying your parking tickets in Indianapolis
could turn out to be highly problematic, and could affect your ability to
renew your driver's license or even result in a driver’s license suspension.
That could definitely affect your auto insurance rates.
Myth: Minor tickets don’t affect your insurance rates.
Fact: Car insurance companies do pay attention to minor tickets. One
minor traffic offense may not affect your rates, but more than one probably
will. And, when combined with a recent accident, there could be serious issues
ahead.
Myth: The color of my car will affect my auto insurance rate.
Fact: The color of your car has very little if anything to do with
your auto insurance rate. The auto insurance industry is basically color-blind
and usually does not care what color car you decide to drive.
Myth: A two door automobile is generally more expensive to insure
than a 4 door sedan.
Fact: Because insurance companies factor in so many different criteria
to price the insurance, including the price of the car, the cars popularity
with auto thieves, repair costs and many other factors, it’s simply not true
that a two door vehicle generally costs more to insure than a four door,
in fact, the opposite is often true.
Myth: Cheap cars are less expensive to insure than expensive cars.
Fact: Not necessarily so, a cheaper car could cost more to insure
than a luxury model, depending on a wide variety of factors, including theft
frequency, repair costs, safety and more.
Myth: Getting a speeding ticket in Indianapolis means automatically
higher rates.
Fact: This is not inevitable. If it’s your first speeding ticket,
and you were not significantly over the limit, you may be spared. But, you
can count on paying a significantly higher price if you get caught speeding
once too often.
Myth: If the police said the accident wasn’t your fault, you don’t
have to pay your deductible.
Fact: Your insurance company will investigate the accident, and they
will decide whether to waive your deductible or not. You may argue the point,
but the police are not necessarily the deciding factor.
Myth: All auto insurance companies for the Indianapolis area charge
pretty much the same rates for the same kinds of car insurance.
Fact: This is perhaps the most costly and wrong idea about auto insurance
that drivers and car owners in Indianapolis, Indiana, could possibly have.
The truth is that if you settled for the first quote you got, you’re likely
paying too much.
Whatever your situation, the truth is, that it pays to shop around. It’s
astonishing how often different auto insurance providers for the Indianapolis
area will have rates that differ by hundreds and even thousands of dollars
for basically the same kinds of coverage. Don’t make the mistake of assuming
otherwise.
Check out some online quotes, it’s easy to do, and you just may find that
you save enough to pay your mortgage for the next month or two or more.
