Tough Times for Drivers and Auto Insurers in Virginia Beach.

By: Kade Phillips, contributing writer at kanetix.com.

We don’t mean to imply that car insurance companies and drivers in Virginia Beach are suffering tough times currently, although there may be some truth to that in one way or another. What we mean is that it has been found by auto insurance companies, that driving at certain times of the day and driving at certain times of the year, leads to an increase in the risk of having an accident and having to make a claim on your auto insurance policy.

It is hoped, that by providing you with a list of these “Most Dangerous Times to Drive”, that drivers in Virginia Beach will not only make a mental note of the increased dangers while driving at these times, but, pay more attention to their own driving behavior and that of other drivers around them at these times. By doing this, we’ll collectively reduce the tragedy brought on by auto accidents that often occur at what should be some of the best times of our lives.

Of course, by being more alert and more aware at these times, we can also reduce the inevitable car insurance claims and higher auto insurance premiums for Virginia Beach drivers that are a direct result of the increase in accidents at these times.

Data from the “National Highway Traffic Safety Administration”,  in their “Traffic Safety Facts 2004” publication, sadly points to one of our favorite national holidays as the most dangerous day to drive. ”Independence Day” or July the 4th, should be a day of celebration for all, but, for many, the tragedy of an auto accident forever marks the day. This is followed by July the 3rd , as the second most dangerous day.

Much of the data suggests that the holidays are the most dangerous times to be driving. It’s unfortunate, that just when Virginia Beach is at its most relaxed, is also the time to be on the highest alert when driving. Besides holidays, some of the lazy hazy days of summer also seem to be a time to be at one’s highest alert.

We can draw some interesting conclusions from the NHTSA’s “Traffic safety Facts 2004” publication.

The following are the Toughest Days for Auto Insurers and Drivers:

1.    July 4
2.    July 3
3.    December 23
4.    August 3
5.    January 1
6.    August 6
7.    August 4
8.    August 12
9.    July 2
10.  September 2

The combination of lots of drivers whose attention is not fully on the task at hand because of a holiday mood (with perhaps even alcohol playing a role for some), is a scenario that makes auto insurance providers very nervous, and it should be cause for concern for you too as you travel the roads and highways of Virginia Beach during holidays. It is a most deadly combination.

Taking this a step further, we can see that a similar pattern exists for days of the week, with Tuesday being the safest day of the week to drive and Saturday being the worst. Presumably, the reason for this is that everyone is more inclined to be alert on a Tuesday, as the work week is in full swing, and most likely to be relaxed and not paying enough attention to their driving on a Saturday when the pressures of work are behind them for a time.

Accordingly, from most to least, the Toughest Days of the Week are:

1.    Saturday
2.    Sunday
3.    Friday
4.    Thursday
5.    Monday
6.    Wednesday
7.    Tuesday

Things have pretty much the same tone if you simply look at the times of the day regardless of holidays and days of the week, that are the toughest in terms of auto accidents. The early morning rush hour, with all of its congestion is not as bad as one might think. It turns out that the drive home is the more dangerous, and the danger diminishes as the evening progresses. It would seem that drivers are much more alert on their way to work than on their way home.

Toughest Times of the Day are:

1.    3:00 - 6:00 pm
2.    6:00 - 9:00 pm
3.    9:00 - Midnight
4.    Noon - 3:00 pm

If you’re really paying attention to all of this, then you should definitely consider just staying at home if July 4th falls on a Saturday and you have to drive somewhere at 4pm.

But seriously, the overwhelming conclusion to be drawn here is that if you want to safely drive for a long time to come in Virginia Beach, Virginia, the best thing you could possibly do, is make a commitment to be alert every single time you operate your automobile.
