Akron has Canton to the south, Cleveland to the north, and is situated an hour south of Lake Erie. It was founded in 1825 and incorporated in 1836.
Akron is known as “The Rubber Capital of the World." In the 1870’s, Goodrich set up office there, followed in 1898 by Goodyear, followed by Firestone Rubber in 1900 and General Tire in 1915. These companies hired people from all over the United States and the world to build the labour force in Akron due to various periods of demand for rubber. During World War I, demand for rubber was high, and demand increased even more by the need for the production of tires for automobiles. During World War II rubber was needed for fighter plane tires. Following the war however, radial tires became standard and many companies were not prepared for the change. Goodyear continues to produce racing tires and Firestone still has a research center there, but Akron does not have as active a rubber industry as it did in the earlier part of this century.
Akron is home to the first Alcoholics Anonymous, which was founded there in 1935. Other firsts for Akron include: first breakfast cereal, first graded school system in the United States, first automobile police wagon, and the first U.S. space suit. Some people of interest that were born in Akron include; rock musician Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders, soul musician James Ingram, and writer/lawyer John Dean who became a key witness against President Nixon.
