Athens-Clarke County, Georgia, has an estimated population of 100,266 people, and the city is located in the northeastern part of the state in Clarke County. The University of Georgia is located here, and it is responsible for its incarnation. The city abandoned its charter in 1991, to form a new consolidated city-county with Clarke County; the area is now called Athens-Clark County.

The area began as a trading post called Cedar Shoals, on the Oconee River in the late 18th century. The Georgia General Assembly granted a charter for the University of Georgia in 1785. The first class graduated from the University in 1804. Cotton mills fueled the early industrial and commercial development. The city became connected to Greenville, South Carolina and Atlanta, Georgia via the railroad in 1841. This helped to expand commercial development in the area. In the early 1900s, much had changed and there was an African-American middle class and professional class in town. The local theatre would host performances of Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, and Cab Calloway.

The town boasts a couple of odd claims to fame. Firstly, Athens has the only one of only two remaining double barreled canons from the American Civil War. The city is home to the famous Tree That Owns Itself, which is a white oak tree that apparently has legal ownership of itself and all of the land within eight feet of its base. The original tree fell in 1942 and a new tree was planted from an acorn from the old tree and this is why the new tree is sometimes referred to as the Son of The Tree That Owns Itself.
