Augusta-Richmond County, with an estimated population of 195,182, was formed when the City of Augusta and Richmond County merged in 1996. The consolidated area is known today as Augusta and it is located on the border of South Carolina and is 150 miles east of Atlanta. The city is the second largest city in the state and is known by several nicknames including: "The Garden City (of the South)", "Masters City", and "The AUG". Recently, Augusta adopted the motto "We Feel Good", in honor of its native son, James Brown, and it is here where he is buried.

Native Americans were first using the area of Augusta as a place to cross the Savannah river. Nobel Jones is credited with creating the first settlement here which was to function as a first line of defense against the French and the Spanish. Nobel was sent to the area by James Oglethorpe and it is he who gave the area its name in honor of Princess Augusta, wife of Frederick, Prince of Wales. In the 1800s, Augusta was a major center for the production of gunpowder, textiles and paper. By the 1900s and before WWII, Augusta had the largest inland cotton industries in the world. Post WWII was a time of great prosperity for the city and that was strongly fueled by a dam which brought hydroelectric power to the area. The late 1970s marked a time when a downtown started in the city. Many businesses moved to suburban shopping malls. The city attempted to revitalize the riverfront area through the 1980s and 1990s. The problem with the plan though was that the main street was not affected by the plan and more businesses left the area as a consequence. To try to help the ailing main street area, a monthly street festival was initiated called First Friday which has helped to bring more people to the area. This latest plan to revitalize Broad Street is starting to work and new bars, restaurants and galleries are beginning to appear.
