Bakersfield, California facts and car insurance information

Bakersfield, California is located north of Los Angeles and southeast of Sacramento, on the Kern River, near the southern end of the San Joaquin Valley. It was founded in 1869 by former California state senator; Colonel Thomas Baker. Baker was known for his hospitality and was reputedly not corrupted by big busines and even subsidized development out of his own pocket. When the Kern River flooded and Baker was asked to plot out a new town, the residents surprised him at the founding ceremony by naming the town Bakersfield, in his honor.

The Southern Pacific Railroad came to Bakersfield in 1874, but due to the high fares, not many people used it. In 1989 the Santa Fe Railroad arrived and with it, so did the people. In 1899, they discovered oil fields and that sparked a petroleum boom.

In 1952 there was a major earthquake in the area (7.3 on the Richter scale) and though it didn’t affect Bakersfield at that time, the after shocks kept coming until about a month later, a 6.5 earthquake struck directly in the downtown area of Bakersfield. Many of the historic structures were destroyed and four people died.

The 311,000+ resident of Bakersfield get more sun than residents in other cities in the United States. Some might even consider Bakersfield a desert. The summers are long and hot and the winters are rainy, brief and cool.

Almost all of the major oil companies have set up shop in Bakersfield and gold, silver and borax are also mined. Some of the crops harvested include grapes, almonds, pistachios, citrus fruits, wheat, garlic, roses and potatoes. Bakersfield is ranked as the second most ozone-polluted city in the United States, according to the American Lung Association.
