Baton Rouge, Louisiana, was named by the French when they settled there in 1719. “Baton Rouge” translates to “Red Pole,” which is what marked the boundary between various Native American tribes. Baton Rouge was incorporated in 1817. It is located in the heart of Louisiana, along the Mississippi River, and is the capital of Louisiana. Massive rescue missions were implemented for those who evacuated the New Orleans area and many remained residents.

Baton Rouge is an important oil refining center, as well as a major port of entry. One of the biggest employers in Baton Rouge is Exxon Mobil. Other industries include chemicals, technology, plastics, pharmaceuticals and food/beverages. Baton Rouge has moderate temperatures all year, with long, humid and hot summers and mild and short winters. Some notable attractions include the Louisiana Art and Science Museum, the new Louisiana State Museum, the Baton Rouge Zoo, the governor’s mansion and the 34-story capitol, which was built in 1932 after the old capitol was burned in the Civil War.
