Berkeley, California, has an approximate population of 102,049 people and the city lies on the east shore of San Francisco Bay, in northern Alameda County. The city is home to the University of California with Berkeley being the oldest campus of the University. The grounds themselves are home to notable institutions including: the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute, Space Sciences Laboratory, Lawrence Hall of Science, and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

The first people in the area were the Chochen/Huichin band of the Ohlone people. The first people to arrive in the area of European and American ancestry came here during the De Anza Expedition of 1776. A great park was first established here called the Spanish Presidio of San Francisco. One of the soldiers involved in this project was granted a large ranch by the King of Spain. This ranch would later become Berkeley as well as adjacent communities. The railroad came to the area in 1876. Soon after in 1878, the people of Ocean View and the area around the University Campus and local farmers incorporated themselves as the Town of Berkeley. Berkeley grew quickly when many people fled here from San Francisco, in 1906, because of the Great San Francisco Earthquake. This growth continued up until the Crash of 1929. The University helped the city fair better than others through the depression years. In the 1970s, Berkeley experienced a migration of people to the suburbs which was like many cities across North America.

From the 1980s until the present time, the area has seen a continuing rise in the price of homes. Today, Berkeley home prices are among the highest in America.
