Burbank, California has an estimated population of 103,359 people and the city is located north of the city of Los Angeles in the eastern portion of the San Fernando Valley. This city, which is located in Los Angeles County, is known as the "Media Capital of the World" because of the large number of media and entertainment companies which are headquartered or here or that have large production facilities here. The area's European history started with two Spanish land grants: Rancho San Rafael was granted to Don Jose Maria Verdugo in 1798; and the Rancho La Providencia, granted in 1821. Dr. David Burbank bought most of the lands totaling 4,600 acres in 1867 and used the land for sheep ranching for many years. Burbank sold the right-of-way through the property to the Southern Pacific Railroad for one dollar because he recognized the value of rail transport. When the railway brought many people to the area, the value of Burbank's land rose and in 1886, he sold it to a group of investors for $250,000 USD. The investor group began developing the land. They named the town after Dr. Burbank and set up the Providencia Land, Water, and Development Company to develop the land.
