The Miwok people were the first to inhabit the area and they hunted elk and fished in the streams flowing from Mount Diablo. Concord was first incorporated in 1905 and it was primarily an agricultural region. Crops that were grown here included wheat, hay, tomatoes, walnuts and grapes. Where the Concord Naval Weapons Station now stands, there used to be huge ranches of wheat. Many vineyards that used to exist in the area were removed during prohibition and replaced with walnut orchards. Currently, the Naval Weapons site has been closed and the land is slated to be returned to the city. It is expected that Concord will develop part of it and turn some of it into parkland - there is over 12,000 acres in the base.
Concord became a sister city with Kitakami, Iwate in Japan in 1974. To commemorate the event, Concord installed a Japanese style park complete with half of a sculpture. The other half of the sculpture called The Communion Bridge, is in Kitakami.
