Costa Mesa, California is a city with an approximate population of 109,563 people and it is located in Orange County. It was incorporated in 1953.

For a very long time, Native Canadian Tribes called the Tongva and Juaneno/Luiseno inhabited the area. The first European settlement came to the area in 1776 with the building of Mission San Juan Capistrano. After the Mexican-American war, the United States took over California and at this time American settlers arrived in the area of Costa Mesa to form the original town of Fairview in the 1880s. The town died after the railway was wiped out in a flood in 1889. To the south of this area, a town called Harper (named after a local rancher) started to grow on a branch of the Newport and Santa Anna Railroad. Harper changed its name to Costa Mesa in 1920. The new town's name is Spanish and means "coastal tableland".

The population of Costa Mesa grew 5 times larger over a period of 3 decades starting around the time of WWII. This was due to the fact that thousands of people trained at the Santa Ana Army Base while they took up housing in Costa Mesa. After the war soldiers returned home to their families.
