Downey, California car insurance coverage information

Downey, California is a city with an estimated population of 110,360 and it is located in southeast Los Angeles County, 13 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles.

The first inhabitants to the area were a Native American Tribe called the Tongva. Like many cities in California, this area had a Spanish/Mexican colonial period following the Native American period. Downey's Spanish history dates from 1771 when the Mission San Gabriel Archangel was founded. This mission is now a California State historical landmark. This mission and the surrounding lands is the birthplace of the Los Angeles area of today. Following the Mexican-American war in 1848, many of these ranches were bought and taken over by Anglo-Americans who were immigrating during and under the United States manifest destiny doctrine. The "destiny doctrine" was a political catch phrase used to justify the American expansion and acquisition of lands from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. The name of this particular area was taken from the town's founder, former Civil War governor of California, John Gately Downey. In 1873, the Southern Pacific Railroad came to Downey which helped the local agricultural area to prosper. Crops produced in Downey in large amounts until 1940 included: Castor beans, fruit, corn, and grain. The city was incorporated in 1956.

Following WWII suburban homes replaced the farms and factories. The largest employer was originally Vultee Aircraft which became North American Aviation, and then Rockwell Aerospace until it was bought by Boeing. This company produced some of the equipment for the Apollo missions and the space shuttle. Airplane and space vehicle manufacturing came to an end in Downey in 1999 after seventy years.

The 4th McDonald's restaurant was opened in Downey in 1953 and today it is the oldest surviving location for the chain. It was one of the first to be franchised by Mac and Dick McDonald before Ray Kroc became involved. You can still see the original 60-foot animated "Speedee" sign and the original Golden arches.
