Car insurance coverage for El Paso, Texas and a bit of city information
With the beautiful weather all year round, El Paso is a much sought-after place to live. It is known as Sun City, due to the fact that the sun shines an average of 302 days per year. According to the Farmers Almanac, it has the fourth best weather in the nation, with natural disasters such as earthquakes, hurricanes, firestorms and tornadoes which are practically unheard of. Because of these ideal weather conditions, cotton, pecans, alfalfa, onions, chili and many fruits and vegetables grow in abundance in El Paso.
El Paso was first known as El Paso del Norte. A Spanish explorer by the name of Juan de Oñate first set foot in the area in 1598, after crossing the treacherous Chihuahuan desert; one of the most formidable deserts in the world. Due to its great seclusion and insurgence, El Paso was touted as the "Gunfight Capital of the World" during the Wild West era. In the 1930's, El Paso became home to Conrad Hiltons first high-rise hotel (the Plaza Hotel).
In the 1980's the city of El Paso started to boom. Fort Bliss was expanded to a huge "Cold War" military center (from a frontier post) and this brought in many soldiers, their families and retirees. The industrial economy was governed by oil refining and copper smelting, and the creation of many low-wage industries such as garment making, drew in many immigrants. Subdivisions were built and El Paso was expanded west, east and northeast of its original area.
Today, El Paso is the 21st largest city in the U.S.A., the 6th largest in Texas, and with a population of over 600,000 people, it is also the 23rd most populous in the nation. Additionally, it has one of the most diverse and multi-cultural communities in the country.
With the completion of a new freeway on El Pasos eastern edge, the city has been experiencing the historical urban sprawl that accompanies such freeway construction. It is also a transportation and communications hub for the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) partners the U.S., Mexico and Canada.
