Hayward is home to an estimated population of 140,030 people and it is located in Alameda County, in the East Bay of San Francisco. In 2000, the towns of Mt. Eden and Schafer Park were incorporated into Hayward which positioned the new City as a major suburb of Oakland and San Francisco. The area were originally inhabited by the Ohlone tribe of American Indians who currently number only 500. Hayward got its name from William Hayward who came to California in 1849 during the California Gold Rush. Instead of mining for gold, Hayward decided to make and sell shoes. He squatted on a ranch owned by Guillermo Castro and pestered Castro. After trying to evict Hayward, Castro was wooed by the gift of a pair of boots into hiring him instead. Later, Hayward bought 40 acres of land from Castro and established a store and a dairy. In 1864, Castro's remaining ranch land was split up and sold to various locals including Hayward, after Castro lost his title to the property in a card game. Castro emigrated to Chile with his family and Hayward would become prosperous after he built a hundred room resort hotel on his land. Hayward also went on to become the road commissioner for Alameda County.
