Jeep car insurance informationThe Jeep has long been a symbol of the American outdoors. The rugged vehicle represents tradition and fun, while still being an incredibly functional vehicle. Over the years Jeep has evolved, but still holds the basic values and design. The first off-road vehicle manufactured, Jeep began in the 1940s in Toledo, Ohio. The first Jeep was produced by Willys and Ford for the American government to be used in World War II. Often referred to as "the wartime limousine," the original Jeeps had the same characteristics of what a modern day Wrangler does now: round headlights and a slotted grille. Although the exact origins of the name "Jeep" aren't concrete, many believe it is derived from "GP," which stood for "government purpose" or "general purpose." Later, it was said that "Jeep" came from "Jeepney," a Philippine taxi. (Jeeps were used in the Philippines as taxis after many vehicles were left behind in the war.) Jeep production for the military continued through the Vietnam war with the M715. This model is still being produced under Kia licensing. In 1945, Willys produced the CJ model, which became hugely popular. Willys was sold to Kaiser in 1953, and the CJ-5 was released in 1955. AMC purchased Kaiser-Jeep in 1963. In 1987, Chrysler purchased AMC and stopped production of the CJ, replacing it with the iconic Wrangler. The Wrangler is still produced today, and still maintains the round headlights. From 1987 until 1995, Chysler produced a Wrangler with square headlights. Many Jeep enthusiasts playfully debate about whether round headlights or square headlights are superior. Originally, round headlights were created to swing back and forth in order to light up the engine carriage. The Wrangler provides Jeep drivers comfort while still maintaining strong off-roading capabilities. The Wrangler has solid front and rear axles, giving the vehicle the ability to be lifted, thus creating more ground clearance when off-roading. The updated Rubicon JK, a model of the Wrangler, has electronic lockers and an electronically disconnecting sway bar for better flexibility. Jeep has expanded to many family-friendly models, such as the Grand Cherokee, born in 1993. The Grand Cherokee was a spin off of the incredibly popular Cherokee, which was much lighter than its predecessor Wagoneer. The Grand boasts a V8 engine, increased cab room, airbags, disc brakes, and a Quadra-Coil suspension. The more modern day Grand Cherokee has an optional HEMI. Chrysler has expanded even further and now offers multiple Jeep models, including the Liberty, the Commander, the Patriot, and the Compass. The newer Jeep Wrangler also offers four doors as opposed to the traditional two, making it more comfortable for passengers. Jeepers have a tight bond with each other. When passing another Jeep, it's traditional to wave. Many Jeep clubs exist across America, and many competitions take place every year to demonstrate Jeep abilities. Jeep has a strong reputation and tradition that is sure to continue among generations. As Jeep is a subsidiary of Daimler-Chrysler. Jeep makes one-half to one-and-one-half ton, four-wheel drive vehicles that can take the driver anywhere. Jeep Wrangler, Jeep Liberty, Jeep Grand Cherokee and the new Jeep Commander are household names even for those who don't go off-roading. Even the word, 'Jeep' has found its way into the language, used for any four-wheel drive vehicle. Jeep's new offering for 2006, the Commander is equipped with a higher level of safety and security features than any previous Jeep or Chrysler Group vehicle. These safety features include, ABS braking with electronic stability control (ESP) to enhance driver control, Brake Assist, side-curtain air bags with roll detection system, and multi-stage front air bags. The frame and body structure are constructed to manage impact in the event of a collision, working in conjunction with the air bag and seat belt systems. All of these features help lower cost of the Jeep auto insurance rate. Jeep vehicles are highly desired by auto thieves. The Jeep Wrangler and the Jeep Cherokee four-door are two of the most expensive models for theft claims. There are over 196 million motorists in the United States, driving about 231 million registered vehicles.
