Lowell, Massachusetts vehicle insurance information
Lowell, Massachusetts is a city with an approximate population of 105,167 people and it is situated in Middlesex County, northwest of Boston, at the confluence of the Merrimack and Concord rivers.
This area was originally the point for the Penacook Indians in pre-Columbian history. In 1655, Native Americans that went by the name of Wamesit were living in the area. The area for Lowell was chosen carefully as a site that was good for water power as there are three falls in the vicinity. In 1826 Lowell was incorporated as a town and then as a city in 1836. The name came from a Francis Cabot Lowell who was a member of two prominent Massachusetts families. Lowell, in the 1850s, was the second largest city in New England, sporting six miles of canals, and had the largest power canal system in the world which ran all the factories. It has often been cited to be the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution in America. In the 19th Century, Lowell became important as a center for textiles, especially cotton. The town was the first industrial town to employ women using what was called the "Lowell System". Women prospered as workers and as labor organizers. It was so prosperous that many people immigrated from many places including: Quebec, New Brunswick, Northern England, Ireland, Poland, Greece, and central and eastern Europe. The Great Depression hit Lowell hard in the 1930s which really finished off a long period of decline beginning in the 1890s. There was only a short revival during WWII. Textile jobs moved south because of cheaper labor and jobs therefore became scarce.
When the area started to grow again it was in the 1970s and 1980s because of Wang Laboratories until they folded in the late 1980s. Things through the 1990s continued to be bad with many people unemployed.
Things have improved in the 2000s due to a prosperous technology sector and diverse culture which includes: Franco-Americans, Cambodians, French-Canadians, Irish-Americans, Laotians, Vietnamese, and Hispanics.
