Car insurance in Lubbock, Texas and other facts about Lubbock.

Lubbock, Texas is located in a part of west Texas, historically known as Llano Estacado, on a branch of the Brazos River, south of Amarillo. It has a population of over 210,000 people.

Lubbock was named after a Confederate officer and signer of the Texas declaration of independence: Colonel Thomas S. Lubbock. Lubbock was originally settled by Quakers in 1879, but was officially founded in 1890 when Old Lubbock and Montery merged. It was agreed that the Lubbock name would be kept as well as the Monterey town site, which resulted in the Old Lubbock residents relocating to the Monterey location. Even the old Nicolette Hotel was put on rollers and pulled to its new location. Lubbock was incorporated in 1909.

Lubbock is a major producer of cotton, although its reliance on water from the Ogalla Aquifer is so large that at the rate at which it is using the water, it will not continue to be sustainable in the long run, unless some major changes and progress is made. Lubbock’s nickname is “Hub of the Plains” or simply “The Hub”.

In 1951 a series of sightings of a v-shaped formation of lights was witnessed by numerous respected residents of Lubbock and after an official study by the US Air Force, it was concluded that this was not a hoax. Though the Air Force suspected that the sightings were either of a bird called a plover, or by night flying moths, other researchers have argued this could not be the case and it remains a mystery to this day, and is regarded as one of the truly notable UFO cases. Another point of interest; rock and roll legend Buddy Holly was born in Lubbock.
