The city of Norwalk, California, has an approximate population of 107,155 people, and it is located 17 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles in Los Angeles County.

Like other nearby cities in this part of California, the area of Norwalk was first inhabited by Native American Peoples by the name of the Shoshonean. The Spanish came in the late 1760s to settle in the area in missions and Padres that were traversed by the famous El Camino Real trail. After the Mexican-American war, in the 1860s, the land in the area was subdivided and put up for sale as part of the new US State of California. One of the Sproul Brothers of Oregon, Gilbert, decided to purchase 463 acres of the land at $11 per acre in the area which was then known as Corazon de los Valles, or "Heart of the Valleys". When, in 1873, the railroads came to the area, Sprouls deeded 23 acres for rail purposes but stipulated that there had to be a "passenger stop" in the deed. After the railway arrived, Sprouls surveyed a town which was named Norwalk after the area's previous incarnation which was "North-walk". An early resident of the 1880s, D.D. Johnston, brought in the first school system to the area and provided funding for the first industry of the town which was a cheese factory. The early families built opulent homes inside orchards, dairies and farms. During the early 1900s, Norwalk became a dairy and sugar beet center for all of Southern California.

As time passed, Norwalk continued to grow. Telephone service was installed, railroads and highways linked the town to statewide markets, and educational facilities were built. In 1957, Norwalk was incorporated and this helped to bring improvements in services to the residents.
