Oakland, California has a population of just over 410,000 people. It is the third largest city in the San Francisco Bay area. Oakland was founded in 1852. Native Americans lived here for over 5,000 years. The Spanish settled here in the 1820’s. With the gold rush came Northern Europeans, Asians and African Americans and many made it their home. Oakland was named by the Spanish, who referred to the woodland of oak trees as “encinal” or “Oakland” in English. It is also nicknamed “Oaktown” and “The Bright Side of the Bay”. It is situated on the eastern shore of the San Francisco Bay, huddled against the Berkeley Hills and borders five (of 65) East Bay Regional Parks.

Oaktown has encountered two noteworthy natural disasters in the late 20th century. In 1989, there was the Loma Prieta earthquake, which happened just before the third game of the World Series and measured 7.1 on the Richter scale. The earthquake collapsed part of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, resulted in 6 deaths, thousands of injuries and almost three billion dollars in estimated damages.

In 1991, wind-driven fires roared through the northeastern section, destroying 1,520 acres and resulting in this being the third most costly fire in U.S. history at over one and a half billion dollars. Twenty-five people lost their lives, and around 3,500 housing units were damaged or destroyed, leaving approximately 5,000 residents homeless.

Besides the rebuilding that was required following these two disasters, there has been considerable redevelopment of the waterfront area in the late 20th century.

The climate in Oakland is considered one of the best in the United States, with temperatures in the 50’s and 60’s during the winter months, and temperatures in the 70s during the summer months.
