Car insurance for Orlando, Florida, and other interesting facts about Orlando, FL.

Orlando, is Florida’s sixth largest city, with over 200,000 residents. Well known for all of its attractions, including Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando Resort and SeaWorld, Orlando is well served by highways, toll roads and freeways. The extensive highway system is necessary for all the visitors coming to Orlando year-round because of the fine weather and attractions.

Orlando, was once known as “The Phenomenal City,” due to the incredible changes it had undergone. The area was inhabited by Seminole Indians for thousands of years before European settlers arrived in 1837. Some say it was renamed in 1857, after a soldier named Orlando Reeves was killed in the Seminole wars. Others think that Orlando Reeves operated a plantation and when settlers found his name etched in a tree, they assumed it was his grave site, and then referred to it as “Orlando’s Grave” and later “Orlando.” The biggest industries at that time were cotton and cattle. Orlando was incorporated in 1875.

In 1880, settlers started growing citrus trees and soon after, the first railroad was established in 1881. Within 5 years there had been tremendous growth with offices and buildings being erected at record pace. In 1894 a freeze destroyed nearly all of the trees and it took 15 years for Orlando to recuperate. In 1971, the construction of Walt Disney World was completed in Florida. With it came a boom in tourist and tourist-related businesses such as hotels, motels and shopping facilities. Today tourism is Orlando’s main business, but it is also a strong film and electronic gaming industry, due in part to Universal Studios and MGM Studios.
