The area was named Oxnard in 1903, despite the ironic fact that the namesakes didn't actually live in the city. Due to the fact that the city had the only navigable port in California outside of San Francisco Bay and the Port of Los Angeles, the area was able to attract defense-based communications and aerospace industries.
