This area was originally occupied by the Chumash Indians. The first European to arrive was Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo and he claimed the area for Spain in 1542. American farmers began to cultivate the land around 1850 when California became a U.S. state. Barley and lima beans were the first crops to be planted. The town was eventually named named after, Henry, James, Robert and Ben Oxnard. The brothers were successful sugar beet farmers when they decided to build a giant red-brick factory in 1899 on what is now the Oxnard Plain. The four-million dollar factory operated until 1959. The area was named Oxnard in 1903, despite the ironic fact that the namesakes didn't actually live in the city. Due to the fact that the city had the only navigable port in California outside of San Francisco Bay and the Port of Los Angeles, the area was able to attract defense-based communications and aerospace industries.
As is the case with many American cities, in recent years, downtown Oxnard has suffered from the effects of urban decline and gang violence. They have had some success in policing the most dangerous groups by imposing gang injunctions to try to limit gang activities.
