Raleigh, North Carolina, is located in the central Piedmont section of North Carolina, halfway between the coastal plain and the mountains. Raleigh was named after the English explorer, poet, writer and soldier, Sir Walter Raleigh. In 1618, Sir Walter Raleigh was accused of plotting against the Scottish King, James I and was thus beheaded. Incidentally, his wife was given his embalmed head, which she kept until she died 29 years later, at which point, the head was buried with her body.

The homicide rate is low for a city with over 359,000 residents, but it does have two of the state’s largest prisons. One of them: Central Prison, is the location of death row, where executions by lethal injection are administered. In the years 2005 through 2006, 9 inmates were executed.
