During WWII, Richmond boomed and four Kaiser Shipyards were built along the waterfront. Thousands of people were employed in building 747 Liberty and Victory ships during the war. There were more ships built here than anywhere else in America.
Today, the major function of the city is as a seaport. There were 26 million tons of goods shipped through Port Richmond in 1993. Most of these goods were oil and petroleum products. Major employers of the city include: Chevron, The Permanent Medical Group, Berlex Inc., Costco Wholesale, Macy's, California Autism Foundation, and Palecek Imports Inc.
