Riverside, California auto insurance coverage and information

John W. North and his Southern California Colony Association founded Riverside, California, which was initially named Jurupa. In 1883, when it was incorporated as a city, it was called Riverside due to the fact that it is situated adjacent to the Santa Ana River. Its nickname is “The City of Trees” after all the navel orange trees that grow there. The first navel orange was introduced in 1873 when Eliza Tibbet received 2 orange trees sent to her by a friend at the United States Department of Agriculture in Washington, DC. The orange trees originated in Brazil and flourished in Riverside due to the ideal temperatures. The oranges quickly became very popular, due to the fact that they were seedless, and looked and tasted better than their predecessors. By 1882, there were close to 250 000 citrus trees in California, almost half of which were in Riverside where the citrus industry had been established. The original tree, which is still bearing fruits, is a tourist attraction to this day.

Riverside does have the unfortunate distinction of being one of the most polluted cities in America and is sometimes referred to as the “Smog Belt”. To its credit, the city has made great efforts to reduce pollution by equipping all of its buses with natural gas and by introducing Metrolink; A commuter rail system that links Orange County with surrounding areas including Los Angeles, Riverside, and San Bernardino Counties.

Riverside is located an hour outside of Los Angeles and has a downtown “Mile Square” district which is designed after downtown Philadelphia. Also within an hour drive you will find beaches, desert resorts and ski hills. With over 287 000 residents, it is California’s 11th largest city and it is one of the fastest growing cities in the nation in the late 20th century.
