Riverside Auto Insurance QuotesRiverside, California auto insurance coverage and informationJohn W. North and his Southern California Colony Association founded Riverside, California, which was initially named Jurupa. In 1883, when it was incorporated as a city, it was called Riverside due to the fact that it is situated adjacent to the Santa Ana River. Its nickname is The City of Trees after all the navel orange trees that grow there. The first navel orange was introduced in 1873 when Eliza Tibbet received 2 orange trees sent to her by a friend at the United States Department of Agriculture in Washington, DC. The orange trees originated in Brazil and flourished in Riverside due to the ideal temperatures. The oranges quickly became very popular, due to the fact that they were seedless, and looked and tasted better than their predecessors. By 1882, there were close to 250 000 citrus trees in California, almost half of which were in Riverside where the citrus industry had been established. The original tree, which is still bearing fruits, is a tourist attraction to this day.
