Originally the area was inhabited by the Chumash Indians who survived on the abundance of fish they were able to harvest from the ocean. They also ate berries, small animals, acorns, and seeds from sage plants. The first European settlement of the area was called El Rancho Simi. This developed into a bustling Spanish colonial town called "Santa Susana del Rancho Simi". The area had a mainly Spanish speaking majority until the late 1800s when Anglo-Americans arrived to settle here. They transformed the area into groves, orchards and farms which lasted until 1980. In 1952, there was enormous destruction in the town caused by a flood.
In 2005, a very large wildfire broke out nearby and burned approximately 17,000 acres. Luckily , no homes were lost within the city limits.
