Sterling Heights came into being as an incorporated entity in 1968. It was originally names Sterling, but there was already a Sterling in Arenac County, so they added the word "Heights" to the name to satisfy state law which says that two incorporated municipalities can not have the same name. They were also considering "Sterling Oaks" at the time. In 1988, Michael Dukakis was filmed here, driving a tank for a Bush campaign commercial.
Sterling Heights is also know as the home of Freedom Hill county park, which has been hosting concerts since 1999, with as many as 7,000 people in attendance. There has been a long legal battle between the park and the residents over noise issues. Hillside Productions, which runs the park, filed suit against the city because they felt that the city was trying to interfere with their business. The city lost and Hillside got $31 million for their troubles. Hillside agreed, as part of the settlement, to build a huger roof over the pavilion seating area and a 14-foot-high sound wall. They did this but the facility remains only partially enclosed and residents continued to complain. After this, Sterling Heights sued 3 insurance companies for refusing to compensate the city for the $31 million payment to Hillside Productions. In the end, the city settled with two of its three carriers.
In 2006 Money magazine said that Sterling Heights was number 37 on a list of the "Best Small Cities" to live in. The city was also listed as the sixth safest city in America (population between 100,000 - 499,999) by Morgan Quitno's analysis of crime rates.
