Visalia, California has an approximate population of 100,612 and the city is located 230 miles southeast of San Francisco and 190 miles north of Los Angeles. It is situated in the center of an agricultural area called the San Joaquin Valley. The city's nickname is "Sequoia Valley" and sometimes "Gateway to the Sequoias" and it comes from being the closest major city to Sequoia National Park which is home to the largest living organisms on Earth; the Giant Sequoia trees.

When Europeans first came to this area, they decimated the local native American population, the Yokuts, through diseases that they had no resistance to. The first building was erected in 1852, out of the fear of attack by native Americans and it was called Fort Visalia. Other early structures were a grist mill, general store, and a Methodist Church. Visalia became the seat of Tulare County in 1853. The city is known for its strong ties with the Oak tree, for which it has been caring for, for nearly 100 years. Originally the area where Visalia is, was the largest valley oak woodland in California. As the city grew, more trees were cut down. The 1890s was the beginning of the people of the area seeing their Oak trees as a renewable resource and a source of pride and they began to protect their valley oaks. In 1909, the city convinced the county to purchase 100 acres of Mooney Ranch. This property was called Mooney Grove Park and today it is the largest valley oak woodlands area in California today. Visalia began its first tree planting program in 1922. In 1971, the city put into place an ordinance which required people to obtain a permit to remove an oak tree - if you remove one without a permit you can be fined $1,000.
