The first big project was to build a bridge across the Brazos River in 1866 which was completed in 1870. It was a 475-foot brick suspension bridge which was the longest span of its day west of the Mississippi. This bridge became the prototype for the Brooklyn bridge. The bridge helped to grow Waco and today it is only open to pedestrian traffic.
The soft drink Dr Pepper was invented in Waco at Morrison's old Corner Drug Store in 1885.
Since 1978, the bones of 28 Woolly Mammoths have been discovered in the area, making it one of the largest finds in the world.
