Wichita is the largest city in Kansas. It is located in south-central Kansas, on the Arkansas River. The city was founded as a trading post on the site of a Wichita Indian village in 1864. It then became the primary stop on a cattle trail that went from San Antonio, Texas, north to Abilene, Texas. That trail was in use from the 1860s to the 1880s, after which the railroads were expanded. Wichita then became a milling center for Kansas grain. Prosperity further grew when oil was discovered near the city limits.

Today, Wichita has become known particularly for its aviation industry – so much so that its nickname is “Air Capital of the World.” In 1917, the Cessna Comet, was manufactured in Wichita. An aircraft call the Swallow was produced between the years 1920-1923 and 43 of these aircrafts were made during this time. During World War II there was a tremendous growth in Wichita’s population when it became a leading manufacturing center for airplanes needed in the war effort. Four bombers were being produced daily by the year 1945. Boeing, Raytheon, Cessna Aircraft, Bombardier and Airbus all have a major center here.

Wichita also has a tremendous entrepreneurial spirit, with businesses such as Pizza Hut, Koch Industries and Coleman all having been founded here. The Center for Entrepreneurship, which is one of the first universities where you can study entrepreneurship, was also started here.

Wichita is also winner of the National Civic League's “All-America City Award.” The All-America City Award was started in 1949 and is intended to honor those cities that have utilized citizen teamwork to undertake community improvements. Each year, eleven cities are chosen for this award.
