A basic auto insurance policy for Detroit usually consists of several different types of coverage, each with its own pricing, depending on the specifics involved.

It is advised that you familiarize yourself with the role that each type of coverage plays, in your Detroit area auto insurance policy, so as to determine the best mix of insurance coverage for yourself and your family. As we all know, it's best to be prepared before the fact, rather than finding out that some aspect of your car insurance was inadequate after an accident has already happened.

So, what are the basics that you need to know for auto insurance in Detroit? There are essentially six categories of auto insurance that you need to familiarize yourself with - Collision, Bodily Injury Liability, Personal Injury Protection, Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist Coverage, Property Damage Liability and Comprehensive.

Let's take a look at them one by one:

If your vehicle collides with another vehicle, rolls over, or otherwise suffers damage from impact with an object, your auto collision insurance coverage takes effect. This kind of car insurance is typically sold with a deductible, and this coverage reimburses you for the cost of repairs (minus your deductible). Many folks choose to raise the deductible in order to lower their auto insurance premiums.

Bodily Injury Liability:
Having enough Bodily Injury Liability Insurance is very important. If you are involved in an accident causing serious bodily harm to another party, you may be sued for a large amount of money.

The designated driver or policyholder, as well as family members listed in the policy, are covered (to the extent of the policy) in the event of bodily injury to a third party by your vehicle or when driving someone else's vehicle with their permission.

Consider the purchase of additional Bodily Injury Liability Insurance beyond the state minimum, when you buy or renew your auto insurance for Detroit. This way, you will find yourself and your assets better protected if such an unfortunate event should occur.

Personal Injury Protection:
Personal Injury Protection, or PIP, as it is sometimes referred, can be quite broad in its application, depending on the scope of protection desired. Medical treatment of injuries to the policyholder and occupants of the insured vehicle is covered, as could be lost income, funeral costs and a wide variety of additional specifics, all of which would be declared in the policy, and priced accordingly. Give your individual situation some careful thought, and while wholly unpleasant, consider the overall impact an accident involving injury could have on you and your loved ones. Try to choose the coverage that best fits your budget and your circumstances.

Underinsured and Uninsured Motorist Coverage:
Often labeled as "UM" for Uninsured Motorist Coverage and "UIM" for Underinsured Motorist Coverage, these policies are designed to protect us from drivers who have no car insurance or who do not have enough auto insurance. This type of coverage takes effect when an at-fault driver does not have enough insurance to cover your loss, or if you are hit by a hit-and-run driver. It will also cover you in the event that you are hit as a pedestrian.

Property Damage Liability:
If your vehicle (driven by you or someone else with your permission) is involved in causing damage to someone else's property, this kind of insurance coverage will usually take care of the repair/replacement costs. This coverage covers not only damage caused to other vehicles, but also damage caused to buildings, poles, fences and other similar structures.

Explosions, falling objects, fire, water damage, earthquakes, damage caused by animals, vandalism, theft and damage caused by riot, are the type of items covered by your comprehensive auto insurance. This type of coverage usually comes with a deductible, which can typically be increased to lower your premium and while not mandatory, may be insisted on by a lender, to satisfy the terms of a car loan.

If you're a new driver, ask your friends, relatives and/or insurance agent/company for more information and advice, or use the Internet to do a bit of research to become familiar with what you personally require for your auto insurance policy for Detroit, Michigan. Consider also the neighborhood in which you live and how much driving you actually do. Ask yourself lots of questions about your driving experience and intentions in Detroit. For example, is your vehicle attractive to thieves, or do you drive in bumper to bumper traffic to and from work? The answers to these questions will help you to determine how to proceed and whether you should skimp on your deductible or not.
